Undergraduate School and Major: Saint Michael's College - Biology/Music
Medical School: Tufts - Maine Track
Life/professions/adventures prior to attending medical school: I worked as an outdoor education field instructor in Wyoming and Belize, various restaurant jobs while a ski bum, hydroponic microgreens farmer, ED scribe, and had a temporary stint helping build wooden sailboats. I worked seasonal jobs for the most part, which meant I had to find a new job with each new season. I am thankful to have a much steadier gig now!
Interests / Hobbies: Can't beat spending quality time outdoors, from going for short walks or runs in the woods, to more epic adventures whitewater kayaking and backcountry skiing. Lately, I've focused my adventures more locally on the beaches of Maine where I am learning to surf. I dabble in playing various instruments, but mostly the banjo. I especially like playing bluegrass and fiddle tunes with other musicians. Also, we just got a puppy so are living the dog life with lots of trips to the dog park and cuddles on the couch.
Favorite Food: They're tough to find in Maine, but I could probably eat fresh, ripe mango every day and never get tired of it.
Restaurant Recommendation: Olive Cafe on Commercial Street in Portland, ME for amazing Lebanese food and a cozy atmosphere.
Favorite TV Show or Movie: TV Show: The Last Man on Earth, Succession; Movie: Lord of the Rings series
What book do you recommend to others and why: I have a couple. A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving simply because it's one of my favorite stories and has some surprisingly humorous moments. East of Eden by John Steinbeck because it's a story about how people determine their own fate in the setting of a classic tale of good vs. evil. It helped me better understand human nature and the power of choice, which has be useful for having empathic interactions with my patients in the emergency department.
Favorite Hike or Ski trail: Spring skiing the Hobacks at Jackson Hole or Tote Road at Sugarloaf. For hikes, the Fiery Furnace is a slot canyon in Arches National Park that is pretty spectacular.
Favorite Beach (doesn’t have to be in Maine): Ingonish Beach, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
Closest brush with a famous person: Fred Armisen sat in the row behind me at an Oregon Symphony concert in Portland, Oregon. I think he may have been doing research for a new season of "Portlandia".
Craziest / Best / Worst Job: When I worked at Casper Restaurant at Jackson Hole. It was a ski in-ski out job, which meant that sometimes they would let us ski to work before the mountain officially opened for avalanche mitigation. We got some great fresh powder turns on those days! One perk of an otherwise crazy job serving up soup and burritos to hungry resort guests.
If I weren’t a doctor I would be: A science teacher
Medical Interests: Wilderness medicine, medical education, pediatric emergency medicine, ultrasound
Personal Goals: To become the best clinician I can be, and be kind and supportive to my patients and those around me.
Favorite Place in Maine: Lots of favorites, but recently visited Monhegan Island off of mid-coast Maine and it was stunning!
Why MMC: I wanted a program where I would personally and professionally thrive. Of everywhere I interviewed, I felt that I'd be happiest here. MMC is an amazing place to train and Maine is an incredible place to live. I feel so well supported by faculty, leadership, and my co-residents. I can't imagine having matched anywhere else!
