Nate Barott

Undergraduate School and Major: Cornell University, BS in Biology

Medical School: SUNY Upstate Medical University

Life/professions/adventures prior to attending medical school: After college, I moved to Utah to work as a ski patroller for a bit. During the off seasons, I worked in a range of fun seasonal jobs. Some of the highlights include scooping ice cream at Yellowstone National Park, guiding youth backpacking trips around Yosemite, driving tractors around an apple orchard in Pennsylvania, working as a park ranger in Acadia and helping with some altitude sickness research in the Nepal Himalaya!

Interests / Hobbies: Running, road/gravel/mountain biking, uphill/downhill skiing, scuba diving, activities involving lakes and rivers, reading, picking up new instruments for brief periods of time (currently on drums)

Favorite Food: Chocolate brownie PB ice cream

Restaurant Recommendation: Breakfast at Ruski's Tavern is delightful!

Favorite TV Show or Movie: Mad Max Fury Road

What book do you recommend to others and why: Two books: Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel (it's just, so good) and The Overstory by Richard Powers (you'll never look at trees the same again)

Favorite Hike or Ski trail: Whichever one I'm on at the moment

Favorite Beach (doesn’t have to be in Maine): Domes Beach just outside of Rincón, Puerto Rico

Closest brush with a famous person: While on a bike trip down route 101 I saw Tom Cruise enter and exit a Starbucks in Malibu

If I weren’t a doctor I would be: High school history teacher/cross country running coach

Medical Interests: EMS, wilderness medicine, disaster response, street medicine

Personal Goals: Learn the art of emergency medicine; attempt winter surfing; successfully joggle a 5K; learn how to play drums; see puffins

Favorite Place in Maine: Isle Au Haut, the remote backcountry island of Acadia! Super nice camping there if you can get a permit

Why MMC: I felt really at ease around the people here and I appreciated the program's ethos of being "doers, not callers" in the department. Plus, living in the great state of Maine is a huge perk!
