Undergraduate School and Major: Providence College, BA in Global Studies
Medical School: University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine
Life/professions/adventures prior to attending medical school: Just before attending med school I had been selling software in Boston for a sort-of-cool tech company and working part time as a basic EMT on an ambulance. Prior to that I had worked in human rights for an organization based in Eastern Africa to end a longstanding civil conflict. It was an incredible experience.
Interests / Hobbies: I like taking my dog to the park, reading, listening to music, running, making pie (strawberry-rhubarb is my go to), cycling, touring Maine's oyster bars.
Favorite Food: Oysters and Indian food. Not together. Although, I don't know... never tried it.
Favorite TV Show or Movie: Twin Peaks or Lost or Parks and Recreation. Or Survivor... guilty pleasure.
What book do you recommend to others and why: "A Little Life" by Hanya Yanagihara is an easy recommendation, but it'll make you weep. Also "Digital Minimalism" by Cal Newport. It's all about how we should eliminate all forms of social media and interaction with our screens entirely, only to add them back intentionally. It's hard to not sound snobby suggesting it, but it genuinely helped me a lot.
Favorite Beach (doesn’t have to be in Maine): Probably South Beach in Edgartown, MA or South Beach in Miami Beach, FL.
Craziest / Best / Worst Job: I'm really lucky that I have a few best jobs. This current one, my human rights job after college, and even my sales job all qualify as favorites. The weirdest job I ever had was the summer I worked in an office building's cafeteria. I was the only employee at the deli for lunch rush and that daily pressure cooker prepared me for the ED.
If I weren’t a doctor I would be: I'd like to think I'd produce music or write about music, but I'm not sure I'm cool enough.
Medical Interests: Alcohol use disorder research, healthcare delivery during and after incarceration, EMS/disaster medicine, medical journalism and history
Personal Goals: I'd like to own my own oyster farm. I think that would be a very nice retirement.
Favorite Place in Maine:
Why MMC: This might sound weird, but go with it. It was critical to me that I picture myself struggling at each of the residency programs I interviewed with. I needed to know that the program and hospital I ended up at would be supportive not intimidating, and down-to-earth, rather than distant or competitive. I knew immediately after my interview with MMC, that it was a place where I could safely struggle and grow. Residency is hard for many reasons and MMC is prepared to support and guide us through it so we become the best providers we can be.
