Our Story

  • We are a 3 year program, matching 10 residents annually

  • We are home to the first residency program in northern New England, having graduated our first residency class in 1999 

  • Our department is the only Level 1 Trauma center in the state of Maine

  • We are the busiest emergency department in the state with an annual volume >70,000 and a pediatric volume >15,000

  • Our graduates are clinical & academic leaders practicing in 30+ different states


We have identified 3 core objectives that guide our program:

  1. A primary objective of the Maine Medical Center Emergency Medicine residency program is to prepare resident physicians for independent clinical practice across all settings including rural and critical access hospitals, as well as well-resourced academic centers in Maine and beyond.

  2. A primary objective of the Maine Medical Center Emergency Medicine residency program is to nurture the development of critical skills including utilization of evidence in practice, continuous quality improvement and patient safety, self-reflection, and life-long learning.

  3. A primary objective of the Maine Medical Center Emergency Medicine residency program is to consider the intersection of wellbeing and clinical practice as related to the culture and structure of the training program, while supporting residents in developing skills that will allow them to achieve long, fulfilling and meaningful careers in Emergency Medicine.
